Starting a Business

Starting a Business

If you are looking to start a new business, you may find yourself overwhelmed and uncertain of what steps need to be taken to ensure you are up and running quickly, efficiently, and most important, legally. There are several important steps you need to take before opening your business, including determining the legal form of business you wish to operate (sole proprietorship, corporation, partnership, or limited liability company), understanding local building codes/permits, how your business will be financed, and how your business will be staffed and where to search for potential employees. The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center has put together an outstanding small business start-up guide that will help you determine all of the above in detail.

The Oconee County Government has also put together an informative business guide that will help you as you begin your journey as a new business owner.
While you now have a better understanding of how to start a business in general, you may have some lingering questions: Where do I get a business license? How much does it cost? Who do I contact for utilities? Are there any other expenses or permits I may be forgetting? The Oconee Chamber of Commerce is in the final stages of completing a Business Quick-Start Guide in order to connect you to the right departments to ensure you have everything complete, from A to Z. The Quick-Start guide will be available for download in June 2018.
